February 2, 2006 10:57 - Head Lice Warning from School
It's funny the little events that'll bring on a moment of nostalgia. My oldest son is in kindergarten and came home the other day with a notice that head lice are circulating around the school. Oh boy. So we had the talk about things to avoid..."Don't throw your coat in a pile with the other kids'...and don't put your head too close to the other kids'...and don't wear any of the other kids' hats or let them wear yours..." His eyes glazed over and his neck went on automatic, nodding his head..."Okay Mommy." But it brought back memories of my sister and I as kids. I vividly remember my mom combing through my hair one day and suddenly breaking out in sobs. OMG, we had lice! She was so distraught. Lice was alot less understood back then and I think she was still under the impression that having lice meant you were dirty or something. Which is untrue, in fact, lice prefer a clean head of hair and they're especially partial to girls hair as it's usually longer so they can more easily find the warm spots they like so much.
Because we lived on a little island only accessible by ferry, we had to have the shampoo brought over on a special trip. When we got to the ferry dock, I think it was a relief for my mom that alot of the other school kids and their parents were also there waiting for the shampoo ferry (pardon the pun). It was a relief until my sister and I started skipping around the dock singing..."We have lice, do you?" over and over again. Mom was mortified. But as kids, we were completely unabashed about the whole thing. It was just another event to celebrate as far as we were concerned. Makes me giggle now given that I'm now the parent lecturing my child on the best ways to avoid getting lice, knowing I'd have to be the one to go through the pain in the rear of killing the little buggers.
Fortunately, I've already done the research and built a page with information on eradicating head lice. You can read it here...Head Louse

February 17, 2006 11:59 - Unwelcome Milestone - My First Grey Hairs
Just a little insight...if you'd prefer to remain in denial of maturity encroaching and the inevitable appearance of grey hairs, best not to root through your hair with an eye peeled for any sign of one. In my case I found not one but several. Then I stopped hunting. That's enough of that, thankyouverymuch. Fortunately greying hair is a gradual process. That and I'm armed with an arsenal of know-how and equipment to eradicate them when necessary. At this point, because there are so few, just adding a few foil highlights or lowlights will do the trick to disguise them, creating more of a blending effect.
If you're in need of a little guidance with battling your own greys....

February 21, 2006 08:01 - Visitor Question About Layered Hair Style
One of my visitors posed this question using the contact form. I thought others might also benefit from the information, so I'm posting both the original question and my answer.Question:
I have long, straight black hair (about 2 inches above my waist) and would like to have long layers in the back of my hair so that there is more movement and adds a bit of interest. I have very healthy hair, but just would like to have a more interesting long haircut. The lady who cuts my hair says this is not possible for long hair. Well, I've seen long layers on long hair in magazines and on tv, so I don't see how that is impossible.
Can you please give me some information about long layers and what I should ask for when getting my hair cut or point me to particular resources on the web where I can actually see that it's possible and how it can be done? This way I can maybe print out the information and bring it with me during my next haircut - as proof that it's possible! I am thinking about finding someone new to cut my hair if I am not going to realize the haircut of my desire with my current hair stylist! Thank you for reading and for any tips and I wish you a wonderful day!
Honlee
Answer:
First of all, long layers throughout the back and framing the face are an excellent idea. Layers should be considered a commitment as they take time to grow out. It's a good idea to start with to keep them within only the last 2-6 inches of hair. (depending on the length) I would suggest you start growing out your bangs, unless you have a long forehead, and are using them to add proportion to your face. Otherwise, having a bit more length to them and styling them in a sweeping fashion will blend better with the layered look. Although the trend these days is a more blunt, straight across bang. So it really depends how "cutting edge" you're feeling. :o)
Find a stylist who uses alot of point cutting and slicing to texturize as removing some of the bulk from your hair will add movement and interest without diminishing the length at all. So, a good combo would be long layers (point cut, or razored) within the last 4-6 inches of your hair and around the face, a good amount of "slicing" to texturize...and a little blending of the bangs with more texturizing and softer styling.
Look for someone with just the kind of layered effect you're wanting and ask them who does their hair. That is, IMO, the best way to get what you want. That, and finding an appropriate photo to bring in...or a few photos that each show an element you like. It's all about communication. Check out these pages for a little inspiration:

February 25, 2006 12:46 - Going Blonde? Read These Tips For Lightening Hair With Bleach
The popularity of blonde hair never wanes. Tonal values may change...golden, champagne, platinum...but blonde is a classic hair color that's here to stay. Achieving a nice blonde hair color on your own can be challenging though. These pages cover all the basics for using bleach to lighten hair, including mixing, application, processing, and toning.Lightening hair with bleach is tricky, and the mishaps are difficult to repair while still maintaining any semblance of health to your hair. But it's effective for some of the extreme coloring effects and in fact, is the only thing that'll do the trick for either platinum blonding or bright punk colors. That said, knowing how bleach works and learning specific things NOT to do will help ensure success with the bleaching process.
If you're planning to bleach your hair (or someone elses), I suggest you read all of the pages on bleaching and the page on Hair Coloring Chemistry, which provides a graphic explanation of the color wheel and underlying pigments. Critical stuff to know for good hair color results. And the less you have to do to your hair (correctively), the healthier it'll stay. So take the time to read up on it first if you're at all unsure.
