March 6, 2008 10:43 - Site Facelift!
I've created a new design for Style Hair Magazine! Over the coming months, all pages will be rebuilt in the new design, so you may notice some discrepancies from page to page in the process. This is something I've been planning for over a year, so it feels great to finally have it in the works! You can see an example of the new design on the hair color page. It's similar to the old design, but uses more up to date coding and makes it easier to structure pages so they display the same across all browsers. Thanks for your patience while I implement these changes!
March 12, 2008 11:27 - Don't Believe The Drugstore Clerk!
(Start rant session)While at the drugstore yesterday, I was in the haircolor aisle and overheard a maddening situation... a middle-aged man with a bit of grey was trying to (inconspicuously) get advice from the clerk about which haircolor he should use to disguise the grey.
I'm sure it happens every day in drugstores spanning the developed world. The problem is, these drugstore clerks don't know what they're talking about! The advice she gave him was completely WRONG! She sold him a permanent color and told him "if you leave it on too long, it'll get too dark. You should to take it off before it's done processing, that's what I did with my husband's hair..."
Grrr... The poor man is going to go home and apply that color, his hair is going to lift slightly, which will bring out the gold. If he doesn't leave it on the full processing time, the blue pigments won't fully develop, which will result in even more gold, and he'll have an unsightly line of demarcation when his natural color grows back in.
I agonized over whether I should jump in and correct her. But I didn't. And I regret it now. I was worried about discrediting her, which is ridiculous because she clearly doesn't deserve any credibility in this regard. How I wish I could turn back time and have the courage to interject with some accurate information.
Here's the deal, if you just want to blend in a bit of grey, use a semi-permanent (non-ammonia) color. Get the shade you want and leave it in the FULL processing time. Make sure you use an ash tone to avoid depositing warm pigments (especially men - warm tones are a dead giveaway that it's artificial color). The color will gradually fade, leaving no visible line when your natural color grows back in and you can simply apply again in 6-8 weeks.
For those with more than 50% grey, it may be necessary to use a permanent solution in a neutral or warm shade (although men are better off sticking with ash). But to blend just a bit of grey, semi-permanent is the best option.
For those of you who use drugstore color, please take the advice of the clerks with a grain of salt. These people are not trained in haircolor chemistry. They don't know what they're talking about and can unknowingly lead you astray with their "help."
(End rant session)
Visit the haircolor section on this site to learn about different haircolor processes and ask for advice if you need it using our free Hair Advice feature. It's my way of making up for being such a chicken and not jumping in to save that poor guy from the outcome he's in for.
