Tips for proper care of infant hair

Baby hair care is very basic.

Products should be gentle and made from the most natural ingredients available, with minimal additives, which can cause irritation and allergic reactions.

Here are some of the best products on the market to protect your tiny people from over exposure to fragrances and chemicals in cosmetics.

Favorite Product Line for Kids & Babies

The Original Little Sprout collection of high quality natural, organic products is at the top of our list for kids' and babies' hair care.

Their commitment to excellence in the ingredients they use for their products is admirable. Yes, they use all natural ingredients, but even within the natural world, some ingredients have adverse effects on the sensitive systems of little ones.

This company does exhaustive research on each ingredient selected. Use these products on your children with confidence that they are being exposed to only beneficial substances.

The texture of a baby's hair can range from peach fuzz to a full head of thick hair. If your little one's hair is thick, it's very important to rinse all shampoo residue from the hair. Lift the hair away from the scalp and direct the water straight through to the roots.

Cradle Cap

Cradle cap (or infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis) is very common in babies. It's ugly but harmless and generally runs it's course within the first year of life.

Thick yellow scales cover patches of scalp and can be found in the folds of the neck, armpits, and diaper area as well. It's not called 'cradle cap' when it's on the baby's bottom, but it's the same culprit... seborrhoeic dermatitis. Using a product formulated to control excess sebum is important in eliminating cradle cap. Here's our favorite shampoo for that task...

Mustela Bebe Foam Shampoo for Newborns

Extremely mild and does not sting the eyes. This shampoo is specially formulated to prevent and treat cradle cap.

The innovative formula gently cleanses scalp while respecting its fragile balance. And the mild exfoliating action of AHA's helps soften and rinse away cradle cap flakes.

Its anionic surfactants help eliminate the excess sebum which contributes to cradle cap while totally respecting the hydrolipidic film of the newborn's scalp.

The shampoo dispenses as a light foam, making it easy to apply evenly throughout your baby's hair.

Simple Tips for Treatment
  • Airflow to the skin is the most effective treatment for this common condition, so if the hair is thick, air flow is limited. To minimize the effects of cradle cap, be sure to remove hats or other head coverings when they're not necessary.
  • Babies with thick hair may be more likely to suffer (though they don't actually suffer) from a prolonged case of cradle cap.
  • Wash baby's hair 2 or 3 times a week and gently scrub in the effected areas to loosen the scales and rinse them away. As your baby's hair dries, brush hair and scalp with a soft bristle brush or smooth-tipped comb.

Baby Hair Brush and Comb

Baby bushes are made with extra soft bristles to smooth through the delicate hair of little ones and not irritate their scalps.

Combs should be fairly fine toothed to be effective on baby's hair and tips of the comb's teeth should be smoothed and rounded.

This brush, comb and mirror set is high quality and functional. The design keeps baby's brush and comb up off any surfaces, organized and sanitary... and downright adorable!
