black hair to ginger hair to blonde?

by Serenity
(Edinburgh,Scotland)

i dyed my hair black, and got fed up with it after about 4 months, so my mum, who was short of cash, got hair stripper and it went a coppery colour, i want to be blonde and go back to my natural ( sort of ashy blonde colour), what colour hair dye will i need to neutralize or dye my hair back to ash blonde or blonde?
(my mum has no money for professional and i get bullied because of the ginger)

Ginger to blonde
by: Anonymous

I'm naturally quite dark brown and i wanted to go blonde so i at fist tried a pre-lightener which took me sort or ginger only to realise i really should of used a hair bleach kit. I then brought one of those and it took me blonde/gingery (but lighter than before) I was then advised that to counteract the reds in your hair that you need to use dye's with a blue base for example ash blonde.
It may still take a few attempts but eventually the ginger/reds get lighter.
You apprently need to to back to redish before going dark again.

Hope this helps.

pre-lightener, XXL
by: BILLIE

use a pre-lightener first, this will turn your previous dyed hair alot lighter and get rid of most of the dark tones
then use XXL blonde as this will help to develop the total blonde colour

Blond from Black
by: Anonymous

Blond dyes off the shelf wont dye black hair blond. I used 12% peroxide mixed with a powdered pre lightener and it went light blond with bits of light ginger (after 3 goes). What sorts the colour out from there is a toner, the undertone in black dye is red thats why it goes ginger but once it's all ginger its alot more easier to go blond

you cannt just use semi permenants on your hair to go blonde, i had black dyed hair (im naturally dark brown) then used a pre lightener and a bleach straight after n then that night also a light blonde permanent dye and it went bright orange so the next day got medium ash brown and it went fine and now evry few weeks or so i just dye it whatever blonde i think is right to my hair and it more or less takes, the ginger tones still come back but they always go when i dye it but honestly if you have some spare money i advise hair dressers becuse it hurts your scalp and can make your hair really stringy and fall out =]

I've gone black to blonde 3 times
by: Anonymous

Going from black to blonde is easy but you've got to go through the dodgy tiger ginger hair! I use bleach (Xxl blonde) and after 4 to 5 times then you can dye it an ash blonde which will still leave a ginger tone to it. Use the touch of silver shampoo and carry on with lighter ash blondes every time! It's a marathon not a race but worth it in the end when you have blonde hair :)

from bad to GREAT
by: Hairdresser myslef

i had black hair and had been colouring it black for months, i wanted to go blonde in a day so i used 3 hair strippers and a toner this didnt work and i was bright ginger so the next day i got xxl live ash blonde and used it twice! FAILLLL, this made my roots white and the rest of my hair a brighter ginger, i know should of had it done in a salon, well ive been looking online and everywere says go to a hairdressers, but they are just so expensive right? so i found this college where people train to do hairdressing and it was really cheep like £10 and now im blonde :) they highlighted it and it looks fab! so that £10 worked out cheeper then the £28 i spent in boots finding different things that ended up making my hair feel chewy and dry! RESULT!!!! try it i live in birmingham and the place was called (reflections training academy)

BE CAREFUL WITH BLEACH!!
by: Hanna

I managed to dye my hair from black to blonde using jerome russell bleach powder + developer. I bleached it once a week and used nice and easy ash blonde dye to tone it (then finally a purple based silver shampoo to get the yellow out). Honestly though, a load of my hair fell out :( and the hairdresser had to cut a lot out too. it went from being just past my bra strap to shoulder length! i was gutted!

this time im using colourB4 to strip the dark dye, and mixing vitamin c tablets with head and shoulders shampoo. then going on to using 1 part bleach mixed with 2 part shampoo.

sorry for this super long response, i'm just letting people know they should be really reeeally careful with bleach. good luck everyone :D

my natural hair colour is brown, i dyed my hair red and soon got tired and put 5 brown dyes on my hair over the course of 6 months but after they washed out i still had a red tinge to it. i now want to go blonde (an ash blonde) so yesterday i bought a colour b4 stripper and now my hair is a dark ginger, tonight i am going to dye it a medium blonde and just hope that it works, ill let you know if it goes ok.

hair coloring
by: Michelle

Yes, a color remover (like colorb4) does remove artificial pigment but it leaves your hair in it's raw, natural underlying pigment state.

If your underlying pigment is a strong orange or ginger, it will not tone out with an ash blonde toner unless you first pre-lighten it with bleach to get it to a pale yellow stage. The only way to achieve a neutral or ash blonde tone on hair with strong orange or red underlying pigmentation is to lift out the orangey tones first, then use an ash based toner to alter the pigments.

But the pigments used in ash hair color will NOT tone out a ginger orange. They are only effective once the hair has been lightened to the yellow stage.

I urge anyone who is considering attempting to lighten and tone their hair on their own to read the following articles, which provide a detailed look at how hair coloring works:

Hair toner

Hope this helps,
