Bleaching hair at home

Can I just use laundry bleach and/or hydrogine peroxide to bleach my dark brown hair?

No!

Don't use household bleach or peroxide for hair coloring.

The bleach can cause severe burns and make your hair fall right out, so it's a definite no-no.

Many people use peroxide to lighten their hair a little. While it's not harmful in the way that bleach is, peroxide on its own is pretty useless as a lightening agent.

It merely exposes the underlying pigment, turning hair brassy.

More about hair coloring and underlying pigments.

If you want to lighten your hair, get a lightening kit and read about bleaching hair and hair toner so you know what you're doing. That way there won't be any unpleasant surprises... like losing your hair!

All the best,
