bleaching

If that black is artificial color then you will have to either use bleach and then toner OR use an oxidative hair color remover, then a toner to get a golden or light ash brown color. In some cases, both a color remover and then bleach are required to get the hair light enough to tone out to a nice shade. BUT, that comes at a cost because the condition of your hair will suffer! What chemical processes has it been through besides the black hair coloring? If it's already been bleached or severely lightened or chemically straightened in the recent past (year or more), then another chemical process could be detrimental. Here's more info on hair color removal.

Hope this helps,
