Let's see...

It would be helpful to have a picture of the current state of your hair to give you the best advice possible. I'm assuming that your old highlights had grown out a bit and you were highlighting the re-growth.

What I picture after reading your description is that you have brassy highlights in the regrowth area. I'm unclear on whether you pulled the new highlights through the whole strand or not.

In any case, the brassy tones are a very common result with home blonding (and salon blonding for that matter).

To deal with the brassy tones, you'll need to either color them darker or re-highlight. Both will be challenging because you'll have to selectively color just the brassy pieces. If you used foils to highlight, it'll be easier than if you used a cap.

Read our article on hair coloring chemistry so that you'll understand how to lighten properly.

More on foiling hair

Bleaching and toning is the most effective way to lighten hair without getting brassy results.

Because your ends are already blonde, you'll have to be careful with the toner.

Very dark to pretty light

I went to school for over a year and a half and was within 2 months of graduating and getting to do my state Board testing to do hair professionally.I have SOME knowledge of hair color but was only able to work with color at school for about a month.

I went from very dark brown hair to blonde.First I went to the salon to fix their mess up.They had turned my hair BLACK,so I had it bleached.(multi tonal)Now I am coloring the regrowth.I have a ton of breakage from the bleach.

I went to Sallys and got a 40 volume developer. Thats the highest they can sell me without a license.60 would be perfect.

And I got Color Charm ultra light blonde with a blue/violet base.It still turned out brassy but light enough I can live with it.And it matches my low lights perfectly..I used a grocery store toner-way too harsh.I would buy the professional stuff next time.

If I recolor my roots with ultra light ASH blonde will it turn out better? Will it turn it green? Someone told me that some products marketed as ash are actually a green base.Is that true? Would that only be grocery store stuff?

I use Argan Oil conditioner every day,and I put 2 purple packets in it.I also put 3 purple packets in my shampoo. It is free of any harsh chemicals and Argan Oil products are all my hair can handle so I figured why not use my favourite shampoo instead of cheap harsh redi-made purple stuff right?

My mom has hair as dark as mine naturally but with lots of grey and she uses 20 volume developer with Light ASH blonde and it turns out a kind of dark weird grey,so I am wondering if I use the ultra light ash with a 40 volume will my hair do the same? I am trying not to tone too often because it dries my hair out so bad,but I have to do something. Our water has lots of rust and even with a really good water conditioning system it makes my hair brassy.Thats why even my conditioner has purple additive, but not too much.

I would appreciate any suggestions on recoloring my roots.I dont want green undertones and I would like to go as cool as possible to begin with because then my water makes it perfect :-)
