When I home color my brown hair, unless I color my hair black, my roots turn orange and the rest of my hair turns the appropriate color. If it's done professionally, my hair color is fine, they use the same color throughout my hair.

It could be due to a few factors. The haircolor formula you're using likely has a 20 volume developer included with it. 20 volume gives you up to two levels of lift and then deposits the color. It's used in permanent color formulas because resistant grey hair (which is what 'permanent' haircolor is purposed for) requires a higher volume of developer to open the cuticle layer and do it's thing.

But with hair that still has it's natural pigments, the 20 volume lifts the hair enough to waken the 'underlying pigments' in the hair. That's where the orangey tones come from. (here's more on the chemistry of haircolor)Your stylist may use only 10 volume peroxide, or perhaps they use a semi-permanent formula. OR, it could be that they use an ash based color to counteract the orange.

Get a semi-perm, no ammonia color in a brown shade (not a really warm shade) to tone down the orange to a more natural looking color.
