Carrot Top!!!

I put on Loreal Feria Havana Brown on my hair but then I attempted to highlight with Loreal Frost & Design caramel highlights--that was a mistake--I now have bright carrot top hair. My scalp is really dry now. How can I get it back to a brown without totally damaging my hair further?

Toner
by: Michelle

Look for a semi (or demi) permanent color in an ASH tone. You need semi-permanent because they are low (or no) peroxide formulas so you won't get any "lift" which is what brings out the brightness in your hair.

At this point, just apply the color all over to subdue the orange. There may even be some highlights visible after depositing the toner.

In the future, avoid any "designer" highlights and just stick with a simple bleach lightener. Here's some advice on using bleach to achieve the appropriate "level" before using a separate toner to apply a natural tone.

This article on the chemistry of hair coloring will help you understand where the orange is coming from so you can prevent future problems.

All the best,

me too!!

I recently used L'Oreal Dream Blonde in Medium Ash Blonde in an attempt to lighten my hair (which I have been darkening with Clairol Natural Instincts, Medium Ash Brown. My hair is naturally a dark blonde/light brown).... I love the lighter brown color on the rest of my hair, but at my roots where there was outgrowth, my hair is orange!! I hate it so much, it just looks ridiculous.

I think at this point the only thing to do to make it look decent is to bring it back to a brown color by using a semi-perminent like the Natural Instincts that I was using before. So I'm back at square one. Ugh!
