Coloring hair from brunette to blonde?

I had my hair professionally colored a month and 1 week ago and it came out a color that I did not intend having. So when I went back to have it fixed they said they couldn't fix it. I wanna color my hair a blondish brown. Im naturally a dirty blonde and I want it back to the blondish shade because my skin is really pale and this brown makes me feel ugly. Anyone know what color is best? and what exact color would work? and how long after a professional coloring I can dye it myself?
