Covering hair with 25% gray

I have medium to dark brown hair with approximately 25% of it being gray. I try different colors (medium browns either ash or golden) I have tried different developers (10 or 20). When I do the strand test it always has this reddish purple tone to it. I do have some red in my hair in the summer time but not this color. I have had my hair professional colored years ago. When I explained that my hair tends to look brassy or reddish purple she put something else in the hair color and mixed it up before applying it to my hair. It worked great. What was that and how can I acheive a natural med-dark brown look with no gray. I don't mind that the gray may be a lighter color. Please don't say to have it done professionally because at this point in my life that is not an option. Help!!!!

when you use the medium natural brown, also buy medium ash brown. mix the two. the ash cuts the red or orange.
