Dark hair

okay, my hair is a really dark shade of brown almost looks black, ive dyed my hair a purpley red colour which was meant to show up on dark hair, but when i washed out the dye all i achieved was that my roots got coloured, why ?

when ever you are dying your hair if you go light you always want to strip the area first and even out the root to the tip so that you get an even color.
