Dark purple to blonde

by Clara
(Manchester)

I've been dying my hair red for about 3 years now but recently opted for a dark purple and I really don't like it.
Can I dye over it for a more natural colour like brown or blonde?

I have ash blonde hair naturally and once had highlights to cover red which worked well; would that work on purple too?

removing purple

Hi Clara,

If you color over it, it will have to be pretty dark to tone out the purple. A box of lighter haircolor won't lighten it at all because there is already artificial color on the hair. So the options are to use bleach (and yes, highlights would work, although that wouldn't completely get rid of the dark purple, but it might make it more to your liking) OR to use an oxidative color remover.

Here's a detailed article about hair color removal.

Best,
