Vancouver Stylist Named Canadian Hairstylist of the Year

(Vancouver, B.C.)

Chad Taylor of Yaletown's Moods Hair Salon was named 2011 Canadian Hair Stylist of the Year at this year's Mirror Awards. The prestigious award was presented at a red carpet ceremony in Toronto on Saturday.

The Mirror Awards celebrate talent and artistry in cutting and coloring from the most accomplished stylists in the nation – for salon professionals, it's the Oscars of Canada's hair industry.

"This is an absolute honor." said Taylor, in an interview over the phone from Norway where he is busy preparing models for a Joico Trend Show to 250 Norwegian hairstylists. "To be recognized by the Mirror's top industry judges is so inspiring and makes me want to work even harder to give back to our industry."

In addition to styling the tresses of a long list of devoted clients at Moods, Taylor is also a fixture at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. His recent runway work includes shows by designers Jean-Paul Gaultier, Michael Kors, Vivienne Westwood, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Diesel, Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen.

"Working international shows during Fashion Week in New York and Paris is an amazing source of education for me," says Taylor. "There are so many extremes: from beautiful, polished and wearable, to exaggerated avant garde looks designed to inspire. It really trains the eye to see subtleties, and look to different eras for inspiration."

Taylor's big win is the latest for the award-winning team at Moods. The busy Yaletown salon was named Best Salon in Canada in 2009, and its elite team of stylists are regularly ranked among the country's best. In 2010, Taylor was named Canadian Hairstylist of the Year and BC Hairstylist of the Year at the industry's Contessa Awards, and in 2009, he was part of the team that took the coveted Canadian Salon Team award at the Mirrors.

Whether styling celebrities - Moods is the regular haunt of visiting artists such as Florence and the Machine and local talent such as Tegan & Sara - or crafting a cut or colour for one of many lifelong clients, Taylor and his team are committed to excellence.

I recently started schooling at Regency Beauty College. I did my sister Jessica's hair for a concert we were going to. We did this at our house so there wasn't a shoot necessarily, just for fun.

Alice Olson

(Virginia Beach)

My inspiration came from my favorite season....Spring!
I wanted to create hair styles that remind me of the different shapes of flowers.
I used hair-extensions, styrofoam and lots of hair spray.

Mohawk - Pink Tips

Classic mohawk made softer. The sides were molded down and colored black. The mid section was lightened and deposited with a hot pink color.

The hair was styled out with a large tooth comb in the shape of a mohawk. Leaving the hair chic and still edgy.

Diep Tran

by Diep Tran
(Portlan, Oregon, USA)

I have been a hairstylist for two years. I work at Magnum Opus in Portland Oregon and had the opportunity to create a haircut to submit for a contest by Intercoiffure. It was for young stylists 5 years and under and I just wanted to show what I created. I gave my model a longer length a-line haircut. I also took a separate section in the crown area and cut it short just to add a disconnect to the haircut. I took her hair to a level seven copper tone with blond slices going diagonal across the temples. I also used a semi-permanent level four gloss in the front of hair hair to add contrast. For her makeup I kept it very polished and natural. I used a copper tone eyeshadow and a little bronzer around the cheeks to add a touch of color. I challenged myself and created a unique hairstyle I am very proud of!

The overall look i was trying to achieve was FASHION JUNKIE so i made the colour and cut quite vibrant and bold. I left the make up natural but then made the eyes stand out. Its not a normal everyday look that people would go for i'd say its very different which makes it stand out.
