Foil blonde

by Michelle
(Warwick, RI)

I foil my hair blonde and I now have roots that are about 2-3 inches long. The roots are a medium brown color. Can I color my hair all blonde out of box? I'm concerned with what color my blonde ends will turn if I color it blonde.

Use Caution

A couple of things. First, you now have the equivalent of two entirely different heads of hair. The lightened parts, and the new virgin growth. To get an even color now involves treating each part of the hair differently. In other words, just dumping a box of hair color all over will not give you an even color. You might want to visit a salon to let them get you back to one color, and then maybe take it from there in the future with retouches on your own.

Hi Donna,
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I have my hair foiled at a salon, but I'm currently unemployed and really can't afford to go back to the salon until I'm working again. So in the meantime, I thought I could do it myself somehow. Do you think my hair would have the same effect if I tried to match the roots (med brown) and color all of it with a brown?

You'll need 2 different Products
by: Donna in Ct.

Totally understand the money issue. If you were heavily highlighted using a lightening product versus a color, you may run into a problem going back to the darkers color. So you might want to use a semi-permanent product that's in between the color you have and the color you want, and apply JUST to the highlighted portions. Choose a product that says "warm" or "golden" in the name. Leave it on for 1/2 the time the box says, then rinse. Let your hair dry, then go ahead and use your permanent color. The first formula will add back the missing tonality highlighting removed, and protect your hair from going drab or greenish. Hope this helped you. Let me know how it goes.

Think I Misunderstood You
by: Donna in Ct.

Michelle, that last comment would help if you were going back to your medium brown, but I think I misunderstood your intent. If you're going blonde all over, then you could use a permanent color and try to apply it to just the new growth and any darker areas in between the highlights. Rinse that when it's processed, and then "glaze" over the whole head with a semi-permanent blonde.

Giving up.
by: Michelle

Hi Donna, I appreciate your comments, but the more I thought about it, the more I got nervous about turning my hair green or just having it turn out horrible. Having my roots show now, makes my hair unkept and doesn't make me feel good when I go on a job interview (not that I've been on one in a while :-( ... but I've decided to just take the money from savings and go have it done at the salon like I always do. I'm gonna have her go heavy on the roots, so I can go a little longer between foils. Hopefully by the next one, I'll be working. Thanks again for your help and advice!
