Oh boy...

It's such a disappointment when a hairstylist messes up like this! You put yourself in their hands and trust that they know what they're doing. Unfortunately, it's not always true.

At this point, you have a few options...

1) Lighten your hair further, then tone with an ash blonde color.

This is not what I'd recommend because your hair has already been bleached several times. Another application will damage it further. But, I don't know about the condition it's actually in, so if you do decide to go ahead and lighten it again you'll want to bleach it to a pale yellow color. Then tone it with an ash blonde.

This page outlines the chemistry of haircolor and explains underlying pigments.

This page explains how to use hair toner.

Another problem, besides the damage, is that you mentioned that they already lightened some pieces ("scattered blonde highlights") so those pieces will over-lighten and could look really bad by the time the other hair is lightened to the right level. Those ultra-light pieces will also grab the ash tones from the toner more than the other hair and you'll get grey streaks.

2) Apply a semi-permanent darker color all over to return to a shade similar to your natural color or at least a few shades darker to neutralize the strong orange pigments. This is the simplest solution... and the least damaging.

3) Return to the salon and insist that they book you with a capable stylist/colorist to fix your color. This is risky because you won't know whether they know what they're doing until they've finished with you.

I hope you get this resolved soon. I know how disturbing it is to be stuck with a bad haircolor.

All the best,

don't bleach it again.

Unfortunately, you might be stuck either staying ginger or going darker again. I might recommend a medium brown that's a little ashy. If you bleach, you're just lightening this dark dye which probably has red undertones. You'll likely lose your hair before you'll strip THAT out.

You might wait a month or so and opt for a pixie cut so just your natural hair remains.

ask your stylist. But it sounds like you might have to devise a more unorthodox solution than just bleach.

It sounds as if you went to a supper cuts? did you? well something like this happened to me, i went to get my hair back to the color it was light ash brown and i wanted golden blonde highlights. well i got the ash brown perfect but she put in white highlights, it looked like i had salt and pepper gray hair, she then toned it down and i ended up with no highlights. she told me to was it with dish soap for 2 days then call her, and i did and told her the highlites came back but the same white color, so she had me come in and she put a different toner on there it made it more blonde but when i came in i had beautiful light golden honey highlites i just wanted the gray gone and wanted her to put in a fresh ash brown and the same highlites in the same spot, a few on top and a few on sides and that was that, what she did was weave ash brown then white blonde and brown, white, and so on till done, it was horrible. and she made the mistake and made me pay the 2nd time i came back they say on there table in big letters if not happy with color they will pay if done within a week , and i was mortified when she charged me another $40.00 on top of the $80.00 she started with, and i even tipped her, what was i thinking? i would go back or go else were that is what iam doing tomorrow, and have some were else dye it ash brown light, then put in the wonderful honey blonde hightlites i had in the first place. the reason i am not going to the very first person who did the beautiful job in the 1st place, is she is no longer there. and nobody that i saw all the times i went seemed to do as good as a job as she did. so i have to find someone else. and the 2nd girl who did the white highlites i could never go back that would be asking for trouble, she had no idea what she was doing, i want to turn her into her boss, but she knows how to cut my hair, she did admit that she just learned about coloring, but i shouldnt be affraid because she just went to classess and knows what she is doing, oh MY goodness, NO SHE DOSENT!!! sorry if i were you i would look up hair places were u live and find one that is really good on using hair dyes not just cuts, good luck, dont do this alone at home you wil ruin your hair, and then what? you'll have to wait till it is well enough for some professinal to fix it and that could take a good 3 months thats how long i have waited now i am ready for someone who knows hair dye.
