Greying hair

by pat

I'm in my late 40s and am starting to have enough grey hair to make me think about coloring it. Right now, I still like my hair, so I am just thinking about it. One of my big fears about growing older is what I call "straw hair". My mother's generation and all her friends are typical of this - their hair looks dry, brittle, seems unstyle-able into anything other than the old lady hat hair and is generally bleached into the color of straw. I wonder if this is my lot in life or does this only happen if you don't take your color job to a professional?

Do it carefully

Greetings,
I'd recommend highlights/foils to break up the gray hair. You can do this with a nice result, dimenstion, etc. and enhance your hair without having to deal with root lines as soon as the hair starts to grow out. A decade or two later you can reduce the number of highlights and the gray will come in naturally.

Notes:

Have a good stylist do the work. Home kits are where damage begins when they're not used properly. They often give you something other than what you want for color. You'll try something different and every time it damages hair a little more.

Shampoo every 2-3 days and condition every day. This is called CO or condition only. The difference it makes in shine, texture, health and strength of your hair is unreal. We shampoo too much, put on too much product, etc. It all leads down the path to "straw hair". You don't have to go that route.

Have fun, be careful, plan your colors, and enjoy.

Going Grey Gracefully
by: Anonymous

If you are worried about 'straw like' hair, I would head to a professional hair stylist to get your grey's colored. You may end up over processing your hair on your own, leading to that dry, frizzy look. Also, if you don't already, start using deep conditioners regularly to put moisture back into the hair that you may be lacking as you age.
