growing layers out

i am growing my layers out but still want to colour my hair i have brown underneath with blonde highlights on top would it be better to stick to dark colours or do they both cause the same damage

Growing out layers...

Lightening definitely causes more damage than simply depositing a darker color. And if your intention is to grow out the layers, a solid color will create a more uniform look, making the layers less noticeable. Highlighting will draw more attention to the layers.
