Hair Color Trends
Give Your Style an Edge!
Hair color trends change gradually.
Both the tone, and the placement of colors (see below).
Although it seems like there's a different hair color that's "it" each season, here's the truth...
There's really just a cycle of favorites that come, then go, then come again. Generally, towards summer, blonde hair, highlights, and golden tones prevail. Occasionally, to "mix it up" a champagne tone of blonde is in, or beige or platinum, etc...

As the weather cools, rich, deep tones set the standard. Browns have been very popular for a few years, as have earthy, saturated reds.
Don't fret over whether your hair color is "in" or not. Take notice of how often celebs change their hair color. Very few are perennial re-inventors. For the most part, high profile celebrities find a hair color that suits them and stay with it. I'd suggest the same for you, unless you're very adventurous and keen on always wearing the latest hair color trends.
Having said all that, sometimes a change is just refreshing. It's a great feeling to try something different...if it comes out looking good, that is. There are some definite do's and don'ts to creating fashionable hair color.

Hair Color Tones
Modern, chic hair color is done in a combination of hues by
foiling in highlights and lowlights throughout. The super-chunky, high contrast highlights of the past are now more subdued and include 2-4 similarly toned colors that range within a few levels (of darkness) of eachother. The effect adds dimension and a textural aspect to the hair, as well as being more "believable"
(natural looking ;-).
Browns
One of the biggest hair color trends at the moment is beautiful brunette! Celebs like Nicky Hilton, who went with a deep brown, are bringing some of the limelight back to the vivacious brunettes of the world.
Think warm tones when selecting your color, and if you're not looking to cover grey, go with a semi-permanent color, or a temporary product like Sebastian Colourshines.
Blondes
The current hair color trend for blondes is warm tones...Golds, Coppers, Strawberry's. Also slightly pinkish shades (which are actually cool colors)...look for the word "Champagne."
Reds
Reds are always in fashion, right now the focus is on shades of copper. Of course, that's only if it compliments your skin tone. (If you generally don't wear orange, or like how you look in it, steer clear of copper hair!)
Hair Color Placement
In General
As I said above, no more super-chunky, high contrast highlights. We're back to the more organic feel of blended highlights and lowlights.
For extra contrast or fun...place your extra light pieces underneath so they peak through the darker sections. It adds interest without being intrusive. There's also the added benefit of less maintenance...with the highlights underneath, you'll find you don't notice the re-growth as soon.
For Extra Fun
If you're looking for something a little more outrageous, add drama by coloring just the ends (about the last 1/3) of your hair. If you go this route, make sure there is at least a few levels of contrast so the effect is obvious, otherwise, it'll just look like badly matched hair color.
Mens Hair Color Trends...
Men are rivalling women now when it comes to spending on hair products, and coloring is no exception. No longer do men need to hide away behind closed doors, only to emerge hoping no-one will notice their new hue. Men are huge hair color customers, and probably in need of information on it even more than women, who've been openly coloring for decades.
Tones of Hair Color For Guys
Keep it natural. Stay away from too much gold or "warmth". Look for terms like "Slate", or "Ash", or "Neutral". Go with a semi-permanent even if you are covering (a bit of) grey...The natural tones in your hair will remain visible, creating a much more natural look.
If you're going for blonde, be sure to lighten properly by
bleaching and
tone the hair with a semi-permanent "lightest ash blonde" color after bleaching. We've all seen enough yellow hair, and sporting it on your own head is just not necessary!
Color Placement
A few foiled highlights are great for mens hair. Stick with highlighting the top sections, and keep it subtle (within a few shades of your natural color). Highlighting just the tips works well for short to mid-length, heavily textured hair.
