hair getting shorter even though

I dye my hair so I can see from my roots that my hair is growing. However instead of it getting longer in proportion to my roots it actually seems to get shorter and shorter. I am 41. Dying hair for 20yrs, hair is very thick but dry and coarse. Why is my hair not getting any longer even though my roots show growth?
