Internal and External Solutions to Thinning Hair
This page covers the best of what's available today and some important facts about how they work.
In terms of internal treatments, the 2 drugs approved by the FDA are Finasteride and Minoxidil
Finasteride is found in Propecia and Proscar. The drug was originally developed to combat prostate problems, but researchers noted it's ability to halt hair loss and ran with it.
Finasteride can have sexual side effects and is transported through sperm, which can cause birth defects in babies.
Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine, which has proven to be about 25% effective in re-growing hair. Problem is, once you stop using the product, all new hair growth falls out as well as any hairs the Rogaine prevented from falling out during the course of use.
Cosmetic/Topical Hair Loss Products
Thickening powders have been developed to camoflauge areas where hair is thinning.
This one is a natural formulation which can instantly eliminate the appearance of baldness and thinning hair.
This hard-packed powder adheres to the scalp and hair shaft to disguise hair loss.
The application is precise and mess-free and the product can be worn in wind, rain, even swimming! without worry of losing your camouflage.
Styling Products
Products formulated for thinning hair will help to control your style and provide some volume to add fullness. The Folicure line is popular with consumers and very reasonably priced.

Holistic Hair Health
- Scalp Massage - Regularly massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation to the area which can help keep hair growing.
- Gentle cleansing - Look for shampoos containing cocamidopropyl betain (coconut). It doesn't lather as well as other shampoos, but is a very gentle cleansing agent. As are shampoos made from olive oil or wheat germ oil.
- Zinc combined with Vitamin b6 - Studies have shown that the combination of this particular vitamin and mineral inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT (the culprit responsible for androgenetic alopecia)
- Broccoli - A chemical produced when the body is digesting broccoli has been found to inhibit DHT growth. Brussels sprouts and kale may also provide benefits.
- MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) - Necessary for collagen synthesis. MSM is found naturally in foods only when eaten raw. It is destroyed with even the slightest heat or dehydration, and so is lacking from the average diet.
