Hair Pomade: Do You Need It?
While pomade doesn't generally have much holding power, if you get the right product (see below) it works very well for defining curls, controlling frizz and even repelling humidity.
If you have fine hair, pomade may not be the best choice. Though the Kerastase product recommended below is more of a glossing product, which is no problem for fine hair.
Recommended Hair Pomade Products
Redken Water Wax Defining Pomade
A water based wax pomade that provides flexible control without a greasy look. This product works well for all hair textures and doesn't leave a residue or build up on the hair like some pomades do.
If you're looking for a product to define curls or tame flyaways, try out this one. It creates definition and smooths frizz without being sticky or crunchy like a gel or hair spray.
Because this pomade is water based, it is lighter than some of the oil based alternatives, which makes it a better option for fine hair.
Joe Grooming Straightening Pomade
Thick curly hair can be very difficult to control. This pomade is made specifically for that purpose. It is heavy enough to weigh down the curl and minimize the bulky look of this hair type.
The 'straightening' action won't completely remove your curl so if you like a stick-straight look, you'll still need to use a flat iron. But for those who just want to relax unruly curls and smooth frizz, this pomade is a great choice!
This relaxing hair pomade is great for smoothing either when air drying hair or for thermal styling and straightening.
It is lightweight, and works a miracle to repel moisture, reduce frizz, liven up dry ends and boost shine. Your hair will look and feel silky and healthy. Some hair polishing treatments aren't great performers in humid environments, but this one is unhampered by humidity.
Use a very small amount on damp hair before styling or air drying. Or use after drying before styling with a flat iron or curling iron. This serum also works great as a finishing product to give your hair that extra layer of protection from the elements.
How to Use Pomade
Use these products very sparingly by emulsifying the hair pomade into your palms until it's barely there. Then rake your fingers through your hair, making sure to get some product on the under layers. To finish, skim gently over the surface of the hair, coaxing stray hairs into the natural waves where they're supposed to be.
Follow through to the ends for best definition... and don't forget about the back.
