Hair Treatment at Home
Reconstruct and Moisturize Weak or Excessively Dry Hair
And it can easily be done at home for far less than you'd pay at the salon.
Learn about products and process to use for different hair requirements.
Chemical processes, heat styling, environmental factors, even the minerals in your water can have a harsh effect on your hair.
An occasional deep conditioning or reconstructing treatment will help restore your hair to its prime condition. It's also a good idea to treat your hair before and after any chemical processes.

Moderately damaged hair : Severely damaged hair
Deep Conditioning or Reconstructing - What's The Difference?
Damaged hair loses two essential components; moisture and protien. Most times, both of these elements need to be replaced for an effective hair treatment.
Here's how you can easily identify which product you're buying.
"Conditioning" = Moisture
"Reconstructing" = Protein
When you're looking for products, keep those terms in mind to help you determine whether a product is strictly for adding moisture or will restore the protein bonds in your hair.
Repairing Moderately Damaged Hair
THE PRODUCTS
The best products for a dual-impact hair treatment for hair that is moderately damaged are...
- JOICO
Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor(protein) and,
Joico K-Pak Moisture Intense Hydrator Treatment(moisture)
If your hair is very fine and tends to get weighed down with conditioners, the Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Liquid Reconstructorwill offer the reconstructive benefits of the Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor without being too heavy.
-
ApHOGEE
ApHOGEE Intensive Two Minute Keratin Reconstructor
Delivers a blend of keratin building-blocks and beneficial botanicals. These goodies penetrate into the inner layer of the hair and restore strength and shine.
This treatment can be used to revive stressed, chemically damaged hair. But it also works to improve the look and texture of healthy hair that tends to be dry and/or frizzy.
THE PROCESS
PROFESSIONAL TOUCH
Beauty HeatCap Professional
Hair Conditioning Cap
A heated cap, just like the old school variety, makes it ultra convenient to wrap your hair and carry on about your business while your conditioners do their thing.
And they give the conditioning process a little boost by opening the cuticle layer slightly so that the nourishing ingredients can penetrate further in.
Start with clean, towel-dried hair. Get as much of the water out of your hair as possible. If your hair retains a lot of moisture after washing, give it a quick blowdry on low heat until it's damp.
Separate the hair into 4 quadrants by parting it from ear to ear across the top and from forehead to nape.
Squeeze the product into your hands and rake it through your hair. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Concentrate the least amount of product near the roots which should be the healthiest area as that growth is relatively new.
If you're using the Joico hair treatment products recommended above for protein and moisture, apply the Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor
or Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Liquid Reconstructor
first and leave it for 5 minutes. Then apply the Joico K-Pak Moisture Intense Hydrator Treatment
right over top and proceed.
Wrap the hair up in a bag and then wrap a towel around your head over top of the bag to keep the heat from your scalp in. The towel isn't necessary if you have a heated cap (as shown at right). Heat helps to open up the cuticle (outside) layer of the hair so that the product molecules can penetrate deeper.
Leave the conditioning products on for up to 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat this hair treatment as necessary, which can range from weekly to every few months depending on the condition of your hair.
Repairing Severely Damaged Hair
Hair that has been damaged (bleached, permed, relaxed) to the point of breaking needs specialized care.
Are there any products which actually work?
Yes, there are, but they need to be used precisely in order to do their thing.
The following products are formulated to re-build weak, brittle, breaking hair by delivering the necessary keratin protein into the hair shaft, where it can strengthen the bonds of the hair.
If your hair is not severely damaged, these are NOT the treatments for you. They may damage healthy hair and at the very least, won't have a dramatic effect like they do on chemically compromised hair...
-
ApHOGEE Treatment for Damaged Hair
This unique hair therapy is applied to towel dried hair and allowed to dry into the hair until it becomes HARD. Really hard. Let it dry in for even longer than it says on the instructions. And then rinse like crazy... for up to 30 minutes.
When performed properly, this hair treatment is transformative for severely damaged hair. An extreme hit of moisture is necessary after using this reconstructor. Use the Joico K-Pak Moisture Intense Hydrator Treatmentor another deep conditioning product. Leave the conditioner on for 10-20 minutes.
Repeat the treatment after 4-6 weeks if your hair is still damaged and/or breaking. But once your hair is repaired, STOP using this product! -
Nexxus Emergencee
This one is slightly less invasive than the one listed above. The results are less dramatic too. In favor of this product, it doesn't have a complicated application process and can yield good results on damaged hair.
Be sure to rinse your hair very thoroughly. And use a good moisturizing (non-protein) conditioner afterwards to restore moisture.
