Hair trouble!

by kitty
(buffalo,ny,)

I'm 22 and i always hated my mixed raced hair.
i have thick, wavy hair that has been dyed and permed since i was 18. i was so mad over my loss of control over my hair that i shaved and cut my hair into a mohawk.
It's growing in nicely but there is nothing i can do with it . except for straightening it and dying it.

I want to straighten my hair and also dye it because i hate my hair color. is it wise to straighten such short hair? i am now wearing a wig until my hair grows long enough to wear in the summer, and i'm tired of wearing it.

help i'm having hair trouble.

Think of your long term goals
by: Michelle

Hi Kitty,

You can certainly straighten your hair when it's shorter, but if your long-term goal is to have longer hair, it's not something I'd advise.

Listening to your description of all the processes you want to put your hair through so that you'll end up liking it, what springs to mind for me is an overprocessed, fragile head of hair that you'll get the urge to shave off again!

Here's what I advise...

Make peace with your natural texture and learn how to style it to make the best of what you have. If you're not fond of the color, then change it, but don't combine that process with chemical straightening (unless you're simply depositing color, but I get the impression you're talking about lightening).

Here's a great technique for styling curly hair to minimize any frizz and define the curls.

Here's more information on chemical hair straightening. If you plan to keep your hair short to medium length, this may be a good option, but not if your long-term goal is to grow it long.

All the best,
Michelle
