HELP! I want Punky Violet hair. In need of Bleaching advice.

by Suzy
(Washington)

My hair then and now.

My hair then and now.

My natural hair color is brown. Regular brown, not too dark. I dyed it Loreal Feria Power Reds called "Rich Auburn True Red" in "Ruby Rush." Permanent Level 4 I believe. It came out a very vibrant intense dark red.

I have root regrowth, and it's been a few months since I colored it. The red has faded a lot. Sometimes in the light it looks orangey and my boyfriend says it's coppery like a penny. I really don't want red hair anymore, I want it to be a pale banana yellow so I can do it Punky Violet.

My question is... Can I bleach my hair? What volume would I use?

Reasons why I think it would work...:
I've only dyed my hair one time. If I bleached my natural color it starts to go from orange to yellow anyway so it seems like it would be ok...

Reasons why I don't know if it will work...:
I heard if my hairdye has metallic dyes it could turn my hair to mush. I don't have a box at the moment to check and see if it does or not. I also have no idea what volume of bleach to use.

I would love it if you'd help me. =]
Thank you.

Punky Hair

To remove build up of chemicals mix baking soda with your shampoo. Get a hand full of baking soda and pour some shampoo with it. You can sometimes smell the chemicals washing out. If you bleach it you will still see the reds but it will be orange, gold and some blond. I do know to tone it you add a lavender toner to your hair to take out the reds and oranges. So maybe it will work. Good luck

Professional advisable
by: Long-time haircolorist

I'm a hair color expert in the business for 20 years..... My suggestion is to go to a PROFESSIONAL for a color correction!!!! This is a big job with all the colors you have in your hair. It will take time to process it to all the same lightness so that it will be a desirable result, in your case, an evenly colored violet. If you won't, then the best advice would be, do a bleach wash to remove your previous and natural color, and as evenly as possible. To support a medium violet outcome (have it stay after all that bleaching work) your hair needs to be big bird yellow to gold. Lavender would be more like pale yellow to yellow. The violet (or any color for that matter), will slip out otherwise without the underlying pigment base to support it. Use only professional products and have a friend to help to check the back processing. Wear gloves and be careful. There are so many variables about this process......Again........ go to a professional!

good, affordable, experienced advice

I have been coloring my hair dark and bright colors for years. Ive done many different types brands and combinations, I've even had rainbow hair and I did it all myself bleaching and cutting included.

My advice is to go get either :
Kalidescope Colors violet powder and Pure White 30 or 20 Volume liquid activator from your local sallys
or a box or two of manic panic 30 volume bleach, you could use 40 but your hair probably isn't dark enough to need it.

both these products work well and are easy to use
and if you use the kalidecolors violet powder it tones your hair while it bleaches it so the purple looks even better and lasts longer

also for the dye just something simple like Manic Panic, Special Effects, or Punky Colors work wonderfully
and as long as you mix a bit with your shampoo when you wash, your hair will stay nice and bright
