highlights are too ashy

by Paula

I am a licensed hairdresser, & about a year into the hair business, but still very fresh. I need professional advice on highlighting. I did a strand test on a client/friend of mine whose hair is colored a dark brown. She wants to be more blonde with highlights. I lightened it to about the yellow gold stage for about 35-40 minutes and applied a medium ash blonde toner to it for about 5-7 minutes. It ended up almost white, and that is not the tone neither I or her are looking for. What would be the best toner for a natural looking blonde highlight?

I wanted no orangey brass tones, but no white either.
