Highlights, Lowlights and Zebra effect at Roots!

by Lynn
(Dallas, TX,)

I have been going to a hairstylist for the last 6 mths or so. I have had 3 or 4 haircuts and colorings since then. As I have had for many years, my hair is foiled using highlights (bleach) and lowlights (a warm, darker brown color). Since I have been going to her, I have stripes going across my hair (near the base) where you can see the number of colorings I have had. I know there is something she is doing, or not doing, that can prevent this as I never had this prior to going to her. I always had very even color from root to tip and never a stripe! I would appreciate it if someone could help me help her. I would like to stay with her if she can get the color right as she gives the best haircuts I've ever had. Help!

Possible problems...
by: Michelle

Hi Lynn,

There are a few possibilities as to why you're getting the banding effect...

1) Your stylist is overlapping the color onto the previously colored sections.

2) The color is being applied in a sloppy manner, resulting in "bleeding" onto the other hair.

3) She isn't writing down her color formula and as a result, she's using a different formula each time, which gives slightly different results, visible as bands of color.

Some stylists specialize more in cutting than coloring, and many people visit one stylist for their cut and then book with a colorist for their haircolor needs. This may be an option if your stylist just can't get the color right.

All the best,
Michelle
