Don't do it
by: Stephanie

I am not a hairdresser, but I have done that before and my hair was fried! If your having a hard time getting some of your hair through the holes, you can make the holes slightly bigger or (and I recommend this) have someone else do it for you. If you want lots of blond in your hair, don't make the same mistake I did, go to a hair salon and have your hairdresser do it. It costs more than doing it yourself, but it is better than eventually having to cut off your hair to start over again (like I had to do). Please remember not to leave the "bleach" on too long if you do it yourself! You will regret it! Good luck!

hilites without a cap
by: Anonymous

uh,the cap was in there for a REASON!!! if you decide to do your hilites without a cap, there will be no difference in shades of color. you are going to make a HUGE mess and end up going to a professional to try and remedy your frugalness, which you are going to end up paying for in the long run!!! YOU should go to a professional!!!!im just saying!!!!

foils...
by: Michelle

You can definitely still use the lightening product and forgo the cap, but DO NOT just apply all over your hair! You can foil in highlights, although it's tricky so you may want to have help. Going to a professional is also a good option, however I realize that isn't always possible for people, which is why we strive to help, rather than just advising you to see a pro.

Read the entire section on highlighting hair with foils and hair toner to get a thorough understanding of the process. (I'm working on a how-to video where I've done exactly this, used a drugstore brand 'highlighting kit', ditched the cap and used foils. Sorry it's not available yet.) Just mix up a little bit to start and do a few foils in the top to get a feel for it. You can always add more later.

Hope this helps,

in my opinion YOU should NOT do your own hair. if you do i believe that you are going to hate the mess that you make. while i agree with you, michelle, that foils could be an alternative to the cap, this person did NOT have the ability to use the cap, which is very easy, and would probably NEVER be able to use foils with ease is the cap proved to be a problem. for people on a budget that want to play with color that is difficult for them to do at home, i would highly recommend going to a cosmetology school where they can get a chemical service at a huge discount under the supervision of a professional.while i understand some people have a knack for doing their hair themselves, this person should not.

Just Curious
by: gail

I was just curious as to why you had problems pulling your hair through the cap? I can think of several reasons why this might be possible, like you have long thick hair, or can't reach the back, etc...but these could be resolved by getting a friend to help you out maybe, as opposed to your thoughts of just plopping bleach all over your hair...

I have actually done just very light streaking with a brush on the front of my hair, but it is really hardly worth a whole package of highlights to do this.

I actually do agree with using the foil would be a good idea as well, so maybe just get some help or use the foils?
