How do I get my haircolor to match my greying roots

DIFFERENT COLORINGS AND ROOTS

DIFFERENT COLORINGS AND ROOTS

I am 48-years old and have colored my own hair since I was 24 when I started going grey. I did just the roots every 3 weeks. Seven years ago, I started coloring my naturally very dark brown with between 10 and 25% white hair (just on the top of the head) #93 L'Oreal Feria Candle Glow (aka Light Golden Blonde) because the roots came in so white. The roots didn't look as bad when they started coming in when I used that color. I had to color a miminum of every 3 weeks and probably should have done it at 2 weeks. September 4, 2009 was the last time I colored my own hair using this method. I waited approximately 8 weeks (see uploaded photo) and went to a hairstylist. I explained that I wanted my hair as close to the color of my rooots as she could get it (November 4th). I ended up with beautiful highlights and it didn't look much different to me. I was extremely disappointed (see photos); and it cost $90.00. The next day I called and told her it wasn't what I wanted or expected and went back 2 days later (November 6th, see photos). She colored the underneath of my hair a dark brown (still lighter than my natural color) and the top and sides of my head blonde with temporary (I wanted permanent) silver highlights. Still not what I wanted, but closer to what I expected. I acutally liked it much better. Another $90.00. I waited and went back on Dec 16th (see photos) because she told me she would add more highlights and it would only cost $40.00; it was another $90.00. She didn't add any silver this time; it just looks blonde. My roots are so noticeable to me, that I may as well have saved the money I wasted and just let it grow out looking horrible on it's own. I have another appointment in February that I really don't want to do; but I do want to find a way to get a color that is almost white (similar to the majority of my haircolor that comes in naturally on the top of my head); so I won't have to color it again...ever, maybe. I don't believe I'll ever get what I expect not matter what! I'm going broke and not getting what I want. I've had other experiences in the past where professionals don't give me what I want; even showing them exact photos of what I want my hair to look like and I give up on them. I did better on my own with the L'Oreal Feria I've used the last 7 years; which was the last time I would even deal with a professional stylist. The last time I went to this stylist I even told her that I thought she should use something like Clairol's Extra Light Platinum #323 Professional Creme Toner in conjunction with Clairol Pure White 10 to 40 volume creme developer. I didn't know which she should use, but figured it might give me what I desired. What is the difference between a 10 volume and 40 volume creme developer? Is the developer the color that will be added back after using the creme toner? Or vice-versa? I want a permanent color, closer to what grows out of my head naturally, so it would make it as painless as possible to let it just grow out to whatever color it will be naturally; and to not have to color it at all anymore until my real, natural hair has grown out on it's own. She told me it would probably take 4 years for my hair to grow out and I even told her she could cut it shorter, like to shoulder length to make that happen. She told me she might consider that in another 2 visits or more! So, what I'm wondering since I really have little knowledge of haircoloring is, if I take the chance of coloring my own hair (the part that is currently blonde), leaving the under part dark, what could happen to it if not done correctly? I know it can turn green, purple and other colors perhaps; but is that it? And does the lenght of time I leave it in my hair determine this? Does the color get lighter the longer I leave the toner in? Or the developer? The stylist used foils to do the coloring and highlighting she's done already. Is it safe to use a developer and toner over the foil coloring? Or will my hair burn and fall out? I hope you can help me. This is the only place I've found after looking and looking and looking that I feel might actually help me. I would be ever so grateful! Thank you for your help.

omg! nancy you poor thing! first of all, DONT go back to that girl!she is continuing to color your hair every time you go in. at THAT rate, YOU WILL NEVER BE CHEMICAL FREE!! do NOT let anyone color your roots!!! only do the part that is already colored! the second fotos looked the best and you shouldnt have to color it again. maybe just toners. i agree the platinum or steel colored toners will work. either semipermanent or 10volume developer.your hair could use a makeover as far as the hairstyle.its excessive, especially now that you want to go to your natural. if you are a little on the heavier side, do not cut it too, short at first. you dont wanna look like a q tip. maybe just above the shoulders or at the shoulders.it will still be long and you wont go into shock. add long layers to get rid of a lot of that hair that is so processed. maybe some funky assymetrical textured bangs to get rid of a lot at the top and front. personalize it to your face. frame the front long toward the front. it will get rid of a lot of hair, give you a trendier look, and you will have lots less to grow out and still have long hair. depending on how much dark you have you may add lowlights to the bottom, WAY LATER WHEN YOU SEE IT. NOT NOW. a blue color shampoo and conditioner will cut a lot of the orange that you have now. if it is yellow from the bleach, use a platinum toner,ONLY ON THE ENDS. DO NOT DO THOSE ROOTS AT ALL. good luck. it should look much better now and only take a FEW MONTHS to get where you have natural hair.

Just as a little side note: most of us suffer a time when we grow out our color in favor of our naturally greying roots. I am not sure there is a really graceful way of doing what you want to do without it costing a fortune!! Cutting your hair as short as you dare does speed up the process, of course. Even short hair takes months to have the colored hair grow out completely. Good luck!!

Anonymouses: thank you so much for your comments. I am not going back to her again. I do agree that in the second photo my hair looked best and closer to what is growing out naturally. I may have been okay if that was a permanent color; but it wasn't. I am trying to get the nerve to just cover the blonde looking hair myself using a brush, foils, Clairol Pure White and the Extra Light Platinum #323 myself. I'm just afraid I won't be able to do it on my own. Any chance you know if it would work if I just used the toner alone since I've already had my hair bleached less than 2 weeks ago? I lack the knowledge to feel comfortable doing the foils or much more than a straight box hair coloring on my own; I wish I knew more so I could! If I go to anyone else, I'm going to ask if they can do just the top layer that is currently blonde to a permanent platinum or even silver and leave the growth that is already there alone. I feel like a freak at the moment! I just would like it if my roots weren't so different from the color. I knew it would be painful trying to get to the stage of having all my own natural, chemical-free hair, but I didn't realize the extent! I plan to cut my hair soon, but not above my shoulders because I am very heavy and I know it won't look good. I have been considering an inverted bob; just a little longer than most people have. I appreciate your input more than I can express in writing. I'm going to try to lose some weight during this process so I might feel good about something and maybe that will make it a little easier to deal with. Any more comments or opinions are welcomed. Thanks again.

im glad that helped some. try using color conditioners and shampoos instead of more color for now. dont use the toners on your bleached hair if you dont have to. you will be amazed what color shampoos and conditioners will do. aveda has some nice ones that smell really good too. the blue one will make your hair look more platinum. if it starts to look blue, just lay off for a week, then resume. since you are heavy, i would maybe cut it maybe just below your shoulders with long layers. any shorter i think you would feel uncomfortable. good luck.

Shampoos
by: Nancy

I've never heard of this type of shampoo! In fact, I've been using Shimmer Lights Shampoo (it's purple), but I haven't noticed any change from it. Does the Aveda actually change your hair color?

I have long layers in my hair now and I plan to cut my hair a little shorter; but you're right, I wouldn't feel comfortable (and probably would feel naked!) with my hair above my shoulder. Thanks again.

yes, the aveda shampoo and conditioners will change you color. since your hair is already bleached, it will work as a toner on your bleached hair. i think, that you could just use these until your hair grows out. go to an aveda salon. they will have a big selection of colored shampoos and conditioners. the conditioner will give you more color than the shampoos. you could use the conditioners only if you want. if you leave them on a little longer at first, it will deposit more color. again, do not let anyone color your roots. good luck.

Aveda Shampoos and Conditioners
by: Nancy

Thank you very much. I've never heard of the Aveda Shampoos and Conditioners before. There isn't an Aveda near me, but I figured I might be able to order them and have them sent to me if I knew which to use. I looked at both the Aveda Chamomile and Aveda Blue Malva; both have reviews and raves about brightening blonde tones, but I didn't see any that talked about changing the color. Most of the reviews I read were people with hilites who raved about how beautiful and shiny they looked after using it. I'm willing to try anything that would help; so again, thank you. Which shampoo and conditioner were you referring to? The Blue Malva? That would be my guess, but I want to make sure before I buy it because it's kind of expensive and I want to buy the one that might make my blonde hair look as light and bright as possible. I'm even hoping it might appear platinum! But if it doesn't, no harm done.

Another note; I actually went to the local Sally's yesterday hoping for some help and to see if they had the Clairol Extra Light Platinum in case I wanted to go that way at some point. They don't carry any of the products I asked about, so I would even have to order those online if I decided to do that. After the input I've had here, I would rather Aveda before attempting to do something I don't know enough about and would probably need help doing.

I've loved getting advice here. This is a wonderful site. After I find the Aveda and try it, I'll post what it does for me. Who knows, maybe I can actually help someone else. If you have any other thoughts or advice; I would appreciate that too! :o)

Aveda Blue Malva Shampoo & Conditioner
by: Nancy

I used Aveda Blue Malva Shampoo & Conditioner on my hair and I am so impressed. My hair is silky, shiny, soft and vibrant. It didn't exactly change the color, but it brightened it and added so much shine that even though you can still see the difference in color; it doesn't look so harsh and quite as noticable as before. I may just be able to tolerate this for some time before doing anything at all to it. Maybe this will help make it easier while it's growing to it's true color. It's going to be difficult no matter what I do and I've realized it's not going to be easy. Thank you for recommending Aveda. I didn't know it would make such a difference. And again, thank you for the comments and advice.
