How much is too much?

I have had my hair a golden blonde for about a year now. Last week, I decided to go to a salon and color it back to brown. It turned out too dark so I went back to the salon and had them put blonde highlights in. These turned out terrible. I would like to dye my hair back to its original light brown. If i dyed it in a week or so, would my hair be okay? I do not want it to fall out! Thank you.
