How to dye roots to match the ash-blonde on the ends?

by Lisa
(athens,greece)

Hi! My name is Lisa. So happy finding your magazine! Hope you all can help me! I have dyed my hair ash-blonde myself and it's really beautiful! But when I did the roots after about 4 weeks with the same technique they turned out red-orange!

My question is obvious I guess...
How do I correct the damage and how should it be done next time so I get it right?

If at first, you don't succeed...

You can definitely color again with an ash based, permanent hair color. Make sure not to get any of the formula on the ends. If you're wanting to go quite light ash blonde, use a high lift color. These contain a higher volume of peroxide and will help to lift your hair past the orange/yellow underlying pigment...

More about underlying pigments and the chemistry of hair color.

If you used the same formula though, the color should have worked out better for you. There are a few possibilities for why it didn't...

Certain medications can affect how your hair reacts to coloring. Product buildup can also affect how your hair will take color. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup (from either products, minerals from water, or medication residue) before re-coloring.

Hope this helps. Let us know!

All the best,
Michelle
