grey tones...

It sounds as though you have been using a high-lift blonde product and applying it from roots to ends each time. That shouldn't ever be done because the haircolor formula affects the hair that needs coloring (regrowth) and the already colored hair completely differently. AND, you are damaging your hair by repeatedly exposing the previously processed hair to more chemical processes. This makes the hair overly porous (damaged) and more likely to absorb the grey/blue/green pigments in artificial haircolor.

So the ash blonde color, which could be great for your regrowth, lightening and neutralizing some of the brassy tones, but on the previously colored sections, those strong ash pigments are not necessary.

Depending on how bad the blue/grey tones are, you may be best off going to a professional for a corrective color. To fix it yourself is risky. This article explains some of the methods of hair color removal. If you feel confident in your skills as a home hair colorist, you could give it a go. Color removers simply strip out the artificial pigments though and leave your hair in a sort-of 'raw' state, so it needs to be finished with a hair toner.

OR, you could simply color over it with a brown color, but if you do that, be careful what you choose because those ends will still want to grab the blue/grey pigments, even from a darker color, so you could end up with a green-tinged, muddy brown. To do it properly, you'd need to 'fill' the hair with warm pigments first (more on the color back process) and then use a semi-permanent in a brown shade.

So either way, it's a bit of a process, you might as well try for keeping the blonde if that is the color you prefer. Whether that means doing it yourself or going to a pro is for you to decide...

Hope this helps,

quick fix
by: Anonymous

Here is a quick fix for your problem, Buy a strawberry blonde (base red orange) mix with equal parts of 10 peroxide. make sure the color is light strawberry blonde.this will basically tone out the blue ash and should not damage your hair.leave it in for 5 to 10 minutes. Viola. Back to normal.
