Is bleaching a "no turning back" step?

heres my natural color. sort of medium auburn brown
I have never dyed my whole head, but recently I have been considering a big change--going bleach blond. I understand that bleach will permanently remove all the color from my hair, but would I be able to achieve a color close to my original if the final look is undesirable? I have very long hair and do not want to cut it short if the look is disastrous or "gets old."
