Maintaining red hair

by Susan
(London)

I dyed my hair a very bright red and it has faded quite badly within a week. I have been told in the past that if i mix some hair colour with my shampoo and use it everytime i wash my hair it will maintain the colour. I just wanted to know if it was ok to use the mix at home ones, seeing as they advise to use straight away and not hold onto any left over colour.

Not sure I'd do that

That's just me, but I would have a problem leaving something like that around for my kid to find. What I did when I was a red head was get the Clairol Natural Instincts and get the darkest red I could find. My hair was lighter, so it would stain it, and w/i 4 weeks it was ready for a redo, and I didn't have to worry about damaging my hair. You can also get those John Frieda shampoos and conditioners for red hair. Sally Beauty used to sell a color enhancer lotion that you'd put in like a gel when your hair was damp.
