Male Wanting New Hairstyle

Hi, I'm a college student now and all my life I've had pretty much the same hair style. I've just been keeping my hair short for the most part.
My hair is very thick and when it starts getting longer it gets wavy as well. This is the reason I've always kept my hair short. If I continue to let it grow out it becomes a short, messy fro, which I really don't want. Yet at the same time of sick of having the same hair style.
I've even tried straightening my hair, which only worked for a day or two. I feel like I don't really have a choice in style since my hair is so thick and wavy. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!
