My hair is alburn dye and I hate it

I had sandy light brown hair and highlighted blonde. I wanted to go back to my original color and my hairdressed dyed it a darker alburn color. I asked for no red in my hair and it is red :( Now she is saying she should just highlight it blonde over the top of this. Should she use a stripper or toner before doing this? I dont want orange hair and I hate the red.

Removing color
by: Michelle

The best option would be for her to use an oxidative color remover. These remove only the artificial pigments and aren't as damaging as bleach. Read more about hair color removal here.

If she bleaches it, even with highlights, it will work, but it's not the best alternative. Especially since you mentioned that you had highlights previously. Because of this, the bleach won't lighten it evenly, the previously lightened pieces will lighten faster and she'll have no choice but to remove the bleach so those pieces don't over-process. By that time, the hair that wasn't previously highlighted will only have lightened to an orangey stage, which is VERY difficult to tone out.

If it were me, I'd insist on her using an oxidative color remover!

All the best,
Michelle
