Its a little bit longer now than it was then!! But thats it straight!!

My hair is natural curly / wavy!! Its beatiful and healthy but I normally keep it in long layers but I need a trim and with my layers it never seems to keep my ends from splitting so does anyone know what to do about it? Because if I straighten it it just frizzes at the end!! Also I think that me being of a mixed race has a lot to do with my hair. Help please!!

Split ends
by: Michelle

Hi Whitney,

My first question is, how often do you have your hair cut? Having a trim every 8 weeks or so is critical for keeping split ends at bay. The only way to get rid of the splits is to cut them out and if they're not cut out, they'll continue to split up the hair strand. At that point, it's VERY difficult to hide them and there's still only one remedy... cut them out.

A technique that works well for minimizing existing split ends is to twist a small section of hair up fairly tightly, until the ends poke out, and then run the blade of some haircutting shears up the side of the twisted section to snip off those tips. This won't get all of the splits, but combined with a good trim, it'll reduce the number of them and greatly improve the look of your hair.

You can help prevent the hair from splitting by (aside from getting regular trims) strengthening your hair with reconstructing treatments and avoiding excessive heat styling.

All the best,
Michelle
