Color Too Dark

Grace, were you applying the color to virgin hair, or were you coloring over a past color? Color will not remove color. In other words, if you had colored it brown black & now wanted to be auburn, which is much lighter, that's why it stayed dark and you only saw the auburn at the roots. You would need to use a product such as a coloe remover or a bleach to lift out the old dark color til it reached the underlaying level of the color you want. Then, the color formula would need to balance out any unwanted warmth. In a salon, the roots and the shaft would each receive their own formula for both processes, for the result to be seamless and even. The best plan now might be to consult with a local stylist....this is not something easy to do at home. Adding any more color to your hair at this point on your own may create further damage. Good Luck.
