Oily spot on hair, (not scalp)

by Kitty
(Nevada City, CA USA)

A couple of months ago after coloring my hair, which I do about every 4-6 weeks, I noticed an oily spot on my hair. It does not go through to the scalp, it is only the top layer and is approximately 2 inches across. It doesn't wash out, it has also grown out with the hair. I wash my hair every day and generally use no product on it. Just blow dry.

Oily Spot

The only suggestion I can think of is to use a "clarifying" shampoo. Even if you don't use a lot of product (me either) you do eventually get build-up. I've had a lot of success with Pantene clarifying shampoo. I use it onc a week and I no longer have any problems with greasy hair.
GOOD LUCK!

I have the EXACT same problem. It comes and goes. Have you figured anything out? I'm thinking it's hormonal or dietary but can't really pinpoint the issue.

I wish I knew how to make it stop. It looks like I don't wash my hair. It's gross. If I don't use any conditioner, it's not as bad, but it's still there. Going on 3 weeks now.

I solved my oily spot
by: Anonymous

I am an RN and married to a Physician Assistant. We have a seen a ton of websites with this same question and no good answer. I have been dying my hair since I was 21 and when I got into my mid 30's I noticed an oily spot at the crown of my head after a dye job. Then it slowly resolved until the next dye job. Then it didnt resolve and stayed longer and longer and started getting bigger. I changed dye products and it only got worse and now taking over the entire part of the top of my head. Me and my husband decided to treat it like Seborrheic Dermatitis using Xstrength TGEL daily for 7-10 days and then switching back to salon quality shampoo and conditioner, medium heat for hair dryer, and kept the rest of my skin mosturized for good measure. Our theory is that my scalped was reacting to the dying and drying out and producing more sebaceous oils (like bald guys have shiney heads) causing the oily spot in my hair. Whatever it is..it works!

I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!!

This happened to me and it is from over dying of hair. I went to a good hair salon and had them remove the color. They re-dyed it and it was gone. Most recently I have used cheap drugstore hair and it has happened again. Same thing....instantly gone.

This just happened to me....

This oily spot thing just happened to me last Friday. I do not usually wash my hair every day, I can usually get 2 sometimes 3 days out of a wash. Friday I washed my hair as usual and when I went to dry it it felt like the left side of my crown was still wet, but it was completely dry. The patch is sticky, and mats together like there is something in the hair. I've washed my hair 4 times over the past 2 days using different shampoo, dish soap, no conditioner, etc. Nothing is working and my hair looks horrible. I did dye my hair 3 weeks ago, but everything was fine up until now.... Ladies who have had this problem before please let me know how everything worked out for you.I don't know what to do and would love to hear some ideas about how to get back my old hair!!

Oily spot issue
by: Crystal Brophy

Hi! This problem with me started yesterday. Of course I just thought that I didn't rinse the conditioner out of my hair. I got home from work yesterday and ran hot water all threw my hair and didn't use shampoo or conditioner. Just plain water. The whole night my hair felt like it had lotion in it. Yulkie!! This morning I used shampoo only, now I still have the yulkie spot on the top of my head.
I haven't dyed my hair in probably 2 months now.
Well funny thing is, I ran out of conditioner and had to use the little tube that comes in the hair dye packet ( I have tons because I never use it all). I an wondering if it's not dying ur hair that does this but the conditioner you use after dying your hair, that does this. I was begining to think that this was a symptom of something and that I needed to go to the Dr asap. I am going to try the dish soap and all that and see what works. I hope it goes away quickly. It looks and feels so nasty in that one spot to the right side on top a my head. It was a bright electric blue tube.

Oily spot in hair

I had the same problem starting about 3 weeks ago. I haven't dyed my hair in about 6 months so I don't think that is the problem. I switched shampoo & conditioners to see if that would clear it up but no luck. Two days ago I tried dish soap (grease cutting kind) and it helped a little bit but didn't resolve the entire spot. Then I thought about my facewash. It's also designed to get rid of grease. I used Biore facial cleanser (clear liquid kind) and rubbed it into the grease spot for about 3-5 minutes while showering. Most of the grease spot is gone and I'm thinking another washing will fix the problem. Hope this works, and hope it helps others also.

The answer

Mine was buildup. My hairdresser used baking soda that she rubbed all of my hair with. She said the grit would rub off the buildup. It worked. I have light fluffy hair again. I'm happy.

hi i had the same problem, first i used CIF on the area and it worked, but beware it goes on increasing, stop using conditioner, and any oils... use bathing soap on the area and it will be fine, just control the level of moisture in hair.

Oily Dilemma! Please HELP!
by: Anonymous

I have been having this problem now for about 2 weeks. Strange thing is, it happened once before about 2 months ago and quickly switched my shampoo and conditioner and the problem was solved, or so I thought. It started again about 2 wks ago and i've switched shampoo and conditioner about three times now and nothing! It has helped a little but its still bad. I havent died my hair in over a year and a half (i went back to my natural color) and I also dont use any hair products what so ever! I only blow dry my hair.
The only spot its effecting me is the top back part of my head. My hair is fine in the front and bottom.
Someone please help!

My solution

I have this problem, too. I eventually decided to try dishsoap as others have mentioned. I squirt the dishsoap right onto the affected area, lather it up, and rinse before using my regular shampoo and conditioner. I do this around every other or every third shampoo. This seems to keep it at bay. If I stop doing this, the oily patch comes back.
P.S. I have never dyed my hair, so my condition cannot be related to hair dye as some others have suggested.

greasy hair NEW
by: Anonymous

I just had the same problem wtih an oily, greasy patch on the top of my hair. I noticed it after I dyed it. I used perfecto10 hair dye which I have been using for the last 4-5 months and I love it because it covers gray. However, after using it this time, I noticed the greasiness on the top of my head. The greasiness did not go away even after several good washings and using a different shampoo and conditioner. I didn't use any product on it afterwards and it was still there. After reading several comments from others, I tried rubbing the hair in that area with baking soda, left it in for a few minutes, then shampooed with a clarifying shampoo that swimmers use. It worked and now my hair is shiny and silky like it normally is.
