With dark blonde hair (especially ash toned - or 'dirty blonde'), using an all over permanent color formula to lighten will bring out all the gold and orange pigments just lying in wait under the surface. The best way to just slightly lighten this hair color is to have an all-over highlighting process done. You could do this yourself using a highlighting kit from the drugstore, which contains a highlighting cap and some bleach powder for lightening. But after the hair has been lightened, it needs to be toned. More on hair toningSo if this is your first hair coloring experience, I would not advise doing it yourself. Either go to a salon, or a hair school where you can have it done less expensively by a student (supervised by an instructor), or find a friend who has experience with highlighting and can help you.

Hope this helps,
