Perming and dying hair after chemotherapy

by Maryellen

My friend has just finished undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer. She had direct infusions every 21 days and was also taking oral chemotherapy once a day. During this time she was advised not to dye or perm her hair. Her hair became thinner but it did not completely fall out. She'd like to know how long she needs to wait before beginning to "wash away her gray" and perm her hair again.

Easier than salon coloring...
by: 8 year survivor

Everybody from hairdressers, wig makers, nurses and other survivors told me to wait at least 6 months until you know what your hair is going to do. I had straight red/brown hair (which I used to highlight) and it came back really curly and almost black. It finally relaxed
(after 8 months) and lightened back to orig color but with some gray. My hairdresser suggested using "casting" which is not permanent but last through 25-28 shampoos and is gentler on the hair. It was so easy that I still do it today. Five minutes in the shower once a month and I'm done. At $8 and on my time schedule I am hooked. I use Clairol Natural Instincts and you get a tube of conditioner you apply each week in the shower to keep it soft and shiny. Good luck!

Using dyes after chemo
by: Anonymous

I was told that I could not dye my hair at all after chemotherapy. Is casting the only one you can use? What is the reason why you cannot dye your hair?
