problem with dark hair colour

I have a problem colouring my hair.I used to have a dark redish brown hair colour, but since I started dyeing it a few years ago the roots started to grow back black and every time I dye it say a dark brown or any other dark shade only the roots lightens a little bit but the colour of the hair does not change at all.last time I decided to seek professional help .I went to a hairdresser who dyed it dark red but only the roots changed while the rest of the hair remained almost unchanged.does the hairdye change your natural hair colour permanently?and how can I get a lighter colour even by one or two shades than this nearly black hair colour.

Hi Nada,

After reading through your post a few times, a theory of what may be happening came to mind...

When you first colored your hair and the regrowth came in appearing black, that was likely because the previous 'redish brown' color that was your natural color only took on a redish brown hue after it was exposed to the sunlight which tends to have a slight lifting/warming effect on hair color. So the regrowth, not being exposed to any of the sun's lightening effect, would naturally appear to be much darker than what you saw on the full strand as your 'natural color' before adding artificial color.

Now it sounds as though the layers of haircolor have built up on your hair and need to be removed before you can achieve a lighter color. Applying a lighter permanent haircolor over a darker one doesn't work. Color doesn't lift color. You'll have to remove the dark pigment (which will leave it orange-ish) and then color it all again to tone it. Here's more info on hair color removal.
