Soft Black back to dark brown

about 5 weeks ago I let a friend high light my hair which has not been touched in 2 years. It turned it Orange. I tried to die it back to my natural color of dark brown only it turned the top of my head orange and the back a dark orange/brown. I thought maybe I died it a little to light to get back to my natural color so a week later I died it soft black. My hair turned blacker then I would have liked. It has been 3 weeks since then and was wondering if it would be ok to try a dark brown to see if it gets close to my natural color.
