Sway hair style

In gone in 60 seconds Sway(Angelina Jolie) has a loose dreadlock style of hair.Is this possible for someone to achieve? If so what would be the best technique?

Attached is a picture of my hair at Christmas. It is quite a bit longer now. Would it be possible for me to do something similar?

Thank you

Sarah

Sure, you could do that!

Hi Sarah,

You can definitely pull off this style. Your version will look a bit more "polished" because of the shiny, rich color/state of your hair as opposed to the hightly processed blonde that Sway has. That type of hair responds better to the roughed up texture this style needs.

But you can get the general feel of the style by doing the following...

First you'll need to know how to backcomb. Check out our article on "big hair" for some great backcombing instructions.

Draw all hair backwards from the front/top hairline in a sort of "V" shape (so that the section gets narrower toward the crown). The rest of it can be left to hang straight down.

Loosely backcomb your hair all over.

Once you have a loose shape, take 1 inch wide sections of the hair that is directed back and backcomb it a bit more to create a separate section. Then twist it (using a putty or hairwax) from the scalp, down the hair strand. You can rub the bottom lengths back and forth a bit between your palms to create a dread-like effect.

Then give it a good shot of hairspray.

All the best,
Michelle
