Taking Highlights to all over colour

by JMFast

I have been having my hair highlighted for many years now. I am a natural dish water blond. I would like to change to an all over golden blond colour and I would like to do it at home. I have not had my highlights done for 5 months. Is it safe to just buy a box and dye my hair?

It Won't Come Out Even

Simply coloring all over highlights will not result in the nice even golden blonde you are looking for.Remember....it's like having two sets of hair now; you have your virgin hair, and hair that's had it's natural pigment removed. Putting a permanent color over it will cause lift and deposit on BOTH "sets" of hair. The professional way to do a tintback is to fill in the missing pigment in the highlighted sections, using a semi-permanent product in a shade that will supply that tone back into the hair. Then after filling, the permanent color can be applied., resulting inan even color job. Bottom line is, most permanent colors come with 20 volume peroxide, and that will lift your highlights 2 more levels, before any deposit of color takes place.

Color will not lift color. Period.Color will only lift virgin hair.
