the 'messy look' ! HELP!

My friend and I have a big problem. We both have very thick, curly, long hair which is impossible to control. We always have to wear it tied back in a neat, geek-ish pony-tail. Everyone else, with perfectly straight hair, seems to manage to achieve the 'messy look' as we call it (a falling out bun/ponytail that is loose but still stays in place). Backcombing might be a complete disaster so what do we do???!!!

Same Problem

I have the same problem. Used to be cute when I was younger but not anymore. I considering cutting my hair and start using a hair straightener but am afraid to damage my hair. Any advise out there would be greatly appreciated!
