To shave or not?

by Lynsay

My hair is very damaged and I am thinking about shaving my head all together. Will this make my hair healthier or will it grow back the same as what it is now? Please help.

Hi Lynsay,

Whether your hair will grow out with similar damage depends on why your hair is in the condition that it is. If it's due to external factors (i.e., coloring, chemical processes, heat styling) then the new hair that grows out will not have the damage. (unless of course, you subject the hair to the same processes that created the damage to begin with)

If the damage is due to internal factors (i.e., nutritional deficiencies, illness, medications) then the regrowth will grow out in a similar condition unless the source of the problem is identified and dealt with where possible.

Look at our suggestions for treating severely damaged hair.

Of course, if you do decide to cut your hair, you're in luck.. short hair is HOT right now. Check out our gallery page of short hair style ideas. It may not be necessary to completely shave your hair, a drastic cut into a fun short style can effectively remove the majority of damaged ends and still leave you with something to style!

Hope this helps,
Michelle
