Blah Hair

I really have no idea what to do with my hair. I have been growing it out for Locks of Love and so I'll be cutting off at least 8 inches. (Three stripes on the shirt in the picture are about one inch.) I am 22 and will graduate from college in May but my graduation portraits are in February so I need to get it done pretty soon. I'm looking for something that is more mature but not to old looking... it should say, "I'm 22 but I've got my stuff together!" I'm on a student budget so I can't be in the salon all the time. Also I am getting my degree in radiologic technology which means I'm doing clinicals at a hospital and I work with patients everyday so I can't wear my hair down at this length or it would drag on people when I reach over them, I need something in the just-below-shoulders range or shorter if I want to wear it down at work. I'm open to any suggestions on length. I would also like something with bangs to hide my largeish forehead but I have no clue what would look good on me. I have never been told what my face shape is so I don't know what would flatter it.

My hair is fairly fine, straight and has a hard time holding a curl. My hairline has been called an 'M' or mini-widow's peak. The pictures are just washed and air-dried with zero product (and zero make-up!). I use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner and dry using a round brush normally but I never seem to get much volume which I would like. That is my natural hair color, but I'm not sure its the best color for me, I feel like it washes me out.

I've never been told what my hair needs and what suits my hair type and face shape so I'm really excited about what everyone here will come up with!

Beat Those Blahs

Beverly, congratulations on your upcoming graduation and your future plans! You certainly do sound like you have "your stuff together", and now you'll need a great easy professional look you can transform quickly for nights out too. Your hair color is gorgeous & shiny. I agree you'd look good with bangs. If you're going short, how about a choppy crop or a stacked bob that would angle forward in the front? Some face-framing layers that flow down from the bangs would be nice. Your profile is great, and something with layers would allow you to play a bit with products that would give more fullness in the top/crown section where you need it. Blow-dry upside down & concentrate on those roots. Try a root booster or volume tonic; even a good hairspray such as Proforma by Matrix. You'll look up-to-date, savvy, and professional. Best of luck to you!

you should cut it so short it goes to your shoulders then make it wavy. You'd look super nice!

Hi Beverly,

It's great to hear that you're donating hair to Locks of Love. Good for you!

You have such strong features that I think you could pull off a dramatic diagonal forward, shoulder skimming bob with a blunt fringe, straight across the forehead. THAT would definitely say, "I'm 22 and I've got my stuff together." But it also sends the message, "I'm hip, dynamic and bold!"

Another option, that's not quite as bold, is the haircut shown here. Or this cut, which is slightly longer.

I love your hair color, personally, but if you find it difficult to get volume, consider adding a few highlights in a copper or golden shade. Haircolor has the effect of thickening the hair strands just slightly and can make silky hair more manageable and easier to style with a bit of volume. The highlights would also help with the "wash out" effect you feel you're getting with your natural hair color. Keep in mind that this will mean having the regrowth re-highlighted every 3 months or so.

From what I can see, you've got an oval shaped face, which is considered the "ideal" face shape... meaning that you have the widest range of hair style choices because MOST styles will look good on you. However, because you also have a long forehead, styles with bangs would be the best option.

You could definitely go short too! It really depends on what you'll feel the most comfortable with... and remember, having shorter hair doesn't mean that it'll take less time to style.

A virtual hairstyle program can be a great tool for selecting a new style. Since there are so many options for you, I'd suggest trying something like this before settling on a style.

All the best,
Michelle
