transitioning my platinum hair

by Rhiannon Amaya

Naturally my hair is a medium blonde ash color. I have been bleaching my hair platinum for 3yrs. I recently decided to change my hair to a darker shade of blonde yet lighter than my natural. My question is how do I make my new shade match all over? Wont I eventually end up with two toned hair?

Hi Rhiannon,

You're right, if you simply darken the platinum hair with a semi-permanent color, that formula will not have the same results on your natural hair. So you have to treat them separately. There are a few steps involved and it is a risky process to try on your own. Warnings aside, here's what you need to know...

Your natural ash blonde color will need to be 'high-lifted' to get the yellow out and then toned to the shade you want. A single process color (blonde in a box) may work for this, but they aren't the most effective for combatting those strong yellow/orange pigments that a medium ash has. Bleaching to a light yellow stage and toning with a neutral semi permanent will give you a more natural looking finished color.

Then there's the matter of matching the ends to that. A semi-permanent color will work for that, but you'll have to be very careful because those platinum ends are magnets for the grey/blue pigments in any formula you use, so you'll have a challenge keeping things neutral. Use a slightly golden shade to prevent the 'ash grab.' If your ends are extremely over-porous, you may need to 'fill' the hair with lots of gold, then use a neutral shade over top of that. Here's a bit more on the 'color back' process.

Best,

A little to much red!!!
by: Kimberly

I dyed my hair Ultra Light Natural Blonde , and my natural color was 2-toned. Roots were coming in as a medium brown and the ends were more light blonde, when i dyed it, it got lighter but it's more of a red tint.. And I dont want red hair !!! How do i fix it ? Very Unhappy

I dissagree with the Editor

I disagree with the editors advice for your natural color you did not say how much lighter you want to be. A med ash blonde is around level 7 or 8 granted platinum is out there about 11 or 12 so any darker will seem shocking. I think you should see a good stylist that knows color before you end up needing corrective color and that's BIG BUCKS. You need to condition your hair to balance the out porosity before you do any thing. 3 yrs of bleaching your hair treat your self go get it done!!

Final color result
by: Rhiannon

I'm sorry. I was a little unclear on what I am looking for as a final result. I want my hair to be more of a honey blonde. I am now platinum and my natural is a med. ash blonde.

Platinum to honey
by: stylistwny

I still think you should get it done by a prof.
you need to put some of the under tones back into the super light hair the best way to do that would be to use a dark to med honey blond ,there should be enough of the missing undertones in there though I'd like to add a little warm natural in there for balance and if its 20 vol. developer I'd water it down with distilled water of course by adding the water you'll make it 10 vol.developer equal parts. And then I would use a level 7 natural for the root area with full 20 vol, your own under tones should warm up the color to match top to bottom. You will have to cover your hair with color do not try to stretch it to far. How long is your hair and how much is you own regrowth? get it done at a salon .
