Does wearing your hair in a ponytail or a bun everyday stop hair growth?

Hi Abby,

No, it won't stop hair growth, but the tension that it puts on the hair isn't great. Not just the tension on the hair root where it grows out of the scalp, but also where it's secured. Tying a tight band around the hair or securing it with clips every day can weaken the hair and cause breakage in that area.

Use fabric coated hair bands without any metal or exposed elastic and avoid metal clips for every day use. And try to reduce the tension on the hair by pulling it back and securing it more loosely.

i`m in rotc and i have to wear a bun everyday. To me it seems like my hair is getting thinner and its harder to style it now. so in my opinion yes it is bad...

You need to make sure that you regularly change the position of your bun, otherwise you'll create weak spots which will cause breakage. Bunning your hair is a very good way to retain your hair growth though because you won't be manipulating it as much.

No, wearing your hair up will now cause it to stop growing. I'm growing mine out so I can give it to cancer, I rarely leave it down. Hair grows about half an inch a month, mine still does. If your hair seems like it has stopped growing it's probably because you want it to grow really badly. Stop focusing on it and you will probably see an improvement. Also, don't let others cut your hair. When you go to the salon, they think an inch is a mile. So, trim your own hair. You'll eventually notice that it is growing. And, if it isn't, then maybe you want to question what you are eating.
